Michael Cooney’s riotous farce has all the ingredients for rib-tickling hilarity! Eric Swan (aided by his Uncle George and unbeknown to his wife, Linda) has pocketed thousands of pounds through fraudulent DSS claims. When Norman Bassett (the lodger) opens the door to Mr Jenkins, the DSS Inspector, deceptive mayhem follows – as do the undertaker, bereavement counsellor, psychiatrist, Norman’s fiancée, a corpse, the ominous Ms Cowper and a rather rebellious washing-machine. A frantic Linda meanwhile consults Dr Chapman regarding the discovery of her husband’s bra, corset and stockings (all part of Eric’s swindling activities)! This fast-paced comedy offers a colourful selection of character roles.

Frank Vickery’s dark comedy revolves around the funeral of an elderly father – not usually an occasion for hilarity. But when the family concerned numbers among its members a wellington-clad cook who bakes almondless almond cakes, another who’s convinced his shopping trolley is a clever dog called Rover (he’s already taught him to beg), and a sister who’s a happy inmate of a psychiatric home, the proceedings are bound to be lively! Add to this a posthumous joke played by Father on three of his daughters and the fact that they’re not exactly what might be termed a close-knit family (they’ve got the wrong person from the psychiatric home), the scene is set for a scorching comedy of personalities and situations!

Faced with a family gathering, world-weary Stephen Febble does his best to be difficult. When his daughter, her dreary husband Alan, their precocious child and – not least – the dog come to stay for the weekend it’s enough to make him reach for the whisky, and for the sarcasm. The climax arrives on Saturday night when his patient wife Virginia has laid on a dinner party and the chiropodist comes too.

The play takes a look at family values which is not only very funny but also has its darker side.
